School Archives

Purpose of the Archives

The mission of the MBA Archives is to document the history of the school from 1867 to the present.  The Archives identifies, collects, preserves, and makes available for research purposes the historical records documenting the history, organization, artifacts, and other memorabilia associated with the history of the school.  At the present time, archival materials are housed in the Patrick Wilson Library.

MBA's Virtual Archives (PastPerfect)

With over 4,200 items and 8,000 images, MBA's archives is a treasure to be accessed with its archival program PastPerfect. By clicking on the PastPerfect link, you can locate photos and descriptions of many pictures, documents, and memorabilia in MBA's archival collection.

Collections of Materials

All items in the MBA Archives are catalogued in record groups. Included in these record groups are: historical documents, letters, manuscripts, scrapbooks, memorabilia, campus architectural plans, Board minutes, visual and oral recordings, yearbooks, and school newspapers and literary magazines.

Access to Materials

Due to the historical value of MBA's archival collection, materials are held in closed storage areas. It is necessary to consult librarians Angela Klausner or Robbie Quinn for access to any items. MBA faculty interested in having students use materials from the school archives can arrange for class visits as well as individual research consultations. Other members of the MBA community may submit requests for access through the librarians.

Acquisition of Materials

MBA welcomes donations of letters, documents, photographs, scrapbooks, memorabilia, and other items that reflect Montgomery Bell Academy's rich history.  Materials may be acquired by gift, bequest, purchase, or any other transaction that passes title of the materials to the MBA Archives.  All objects and documents that are determined by the staff to directly relate to the school's history will be accepted, regardless of condition.  Acceptance of such items means that the Archives will accrue both the cost and the responsibility of cataloging, storing, exhibiting, conserving, and preserving the items.

Hours

The Archives is generally open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m to 3:30 p.m. during the school year and by appointment during the summer months. When preparing to use the MBA Archives, please confirm the hours with one of the librarians.
