MBA Tennis Wins State Championship

The MBA tennis team captured its second straight TSSAA Division II-AA state champion with a 4-2 win over Baylor School today. Check back soon for full details.

From Coach Davidson:

MBA competed against Baylor School in the state championship for the second year in a row and for the second year in a row MBA won 4-2. Baylor School came out strong in doubles and took wins at 2 doubles and 3 doubles to claim the doubles point. MBA struck back quickly in singles, however, with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at 4 singles from Richard Cummins to level the match at 1-1. A loss at 2 singles and a great 6-2, 6-2 victory at 1 singles from Baylor Sai leveled the match again at 2-2. MBA got off to strong starts at 3, 5, and 6 singles, but the hot weather started to affect players and matches started getting more competitive as we moved into the second hour of singles play. Fortunately for MBA, Hugh Graham played some great tennis to beat a strong 3 singles player from Baylor 6-4, 6-2 and just seconds later Ben Elasy won his 6 singles match 6-1, 6-3 to clinch the victory for MBA. Both McCallie and Baylor School brought great effort and energy in the semifinals and finals respectively and MBA had to compete well to defend its state championship. The win caps a highly successful season for MBA in which the team placed 4th in the B draw of the DecoTurf High School Team Tennis Championships, won The Rotary Tournament, won The Carter Invitational, repeated as team state champions and went undefeated in dual matches outside of those tournaments. While the team season comes to a close with this match, five MBA players will compete in the individual doubles and singles tournaments held on Thursday, May 24th and Friday, May 25th also in Murfreesboro.
