MBA runs McCallie close in Sewanee invitational

The JS tennis team fought hard and lost narrowly to an impressive team from McCallie
After being cursed with bad weather on the last four visits to play McCallie, we finally had a beautiful summer afternoon for our full line-up to take on the Blue Tornadoes at Sewanee. McCallie's top of the order got them off to a strong start with wins in the first 3 singles matches, but from that point on it was nip and tuck all the way. James Buntin put our first point on the board at no. 4 singles, which was soon added to thanks to wins by Elliott Bragg at no. 6, and Charlie Warner at no. 12. Comeback of the day belonged to Benton Brown, who trailed 3-7 in the no. 7 singles match, only to prevail 9-8 thanks to smart and consistent play. That left McCallie ahead by 8-4 after the first round of matches was complete, but despite the deficit, MBA were able to find a second-wind and began to close the gap. The Tornadoes picked up the 1 & 2 doubles match-ups, but MBA won at 3 (Benton/Mecho), 4 (Elliott/Jackson), and 5 (Porter/Owen). That left the score 10-7 with three singles matches still out on court. Owen Hall played a brilliant tie-break to overcome his opponent 9-8, and Will Harwell playing at no. 13 singles managed to claw back an 0-6 deficit in his own tie-break to 8-6. Unfortunately, McCallie won the last of the singles, allowing them to end up 11-9 winners overall - but every one of our players acquitted themselves well and this is our best result against McCallie in over two years.
