The Scott Hartman Invitational is held in memory of its namesake, "a former Brentwood High Bruin who set a state record in winning the decathlon in 1986. Hartman, who earned a scholarship to the University of Tennessee, was critically injured in his first collegiate track meet on April 17, 1987, by an opponent’s errant hammer throw. He suffered a catastrophic brain injury and never regained complete consciousness. He died at the age of 36 in 2003."
