Wilson English Grants

The English Department is pleased to offer Wilson English Scholarships to deserving and interested high school students (rising 10th – 12th grades) for this summer. Students who want to explore their writing talents through workshops in poetry, fiction, non-fiction and other types of writing such as journalism, screen-writing, and play-writing are eligible for these awards. Through these programs, students should strengthen their love for writing, enjoy living in a writing community, and nurture their writing in ways they can bring to bear on our school. Students may choose a program offered below or find one on their own, subject to approval.

Scholar Description
The Wilson English Grant recipients are chosen from students in the current 9th, 10th, and 11th grades.  Applicants should show the following interests:
  1. a passion for writing and the study of English at MBA;
  2. an interest in pursuing writing-related fields;
  3. a willingness to use his skills and knowledge developed in these programs to participate in MBA’s publications and contribute to building a writing community on campus.
   
Application Process
  1. Please complete the application form on the right and submit it to your English teacher by Monday, January 8, 2024.
  2. Note that there are approved programs below, but you may research your own program and include its description on the application.
  3. If you are awarded a grant, you will complete the application requirements for your particular program in a timely way.
   
Upon completion of the program, students will be expected to:
  1. Complete an interview with the Department Chair about their experience
  2. Present a portfolio of work written during the workshop or course;
  3. Enter writing contests and find other ways to feature their experience by joining MBA’s Red Poets Society or by writing for a student publication;
  4. Act as resources for the next group of student Grantees.
   
Award Description:
The Wilson Grant will cover the cost of tuition (full or partial) for the course or program. Additional room and board fees will also be considered, as well as travel costs. Method of payment and/or reimbursement will be arranged after the Wilson Grants have been awarded.

Students should be aware that some programs may incur additional costs or require additional fees. Any miscellaneous costs beyond the approved program costs will not be covered.
   
Pre-approved programs:
  1. The fees for these programs differ significantly; your grant may or may not cover the full cost of your program.
  2. There are many creative writing programs across the country. If  you don't find a suitable program for you on the list below, you should research a program that fits your interests. Note: Some of these programs have far more competitive admissions than others.

    
    
Cornell University Summer College

Bard College at Simon's Rock Young Writers Workshop

Since 1983 the Young Writers Workshop has offered students the opportunity to explore new directions in their writing in a supportive, collaborative environment. Daily informal writing activities lead to more polished pieces, including personal narratives, short stories, poems, and exploratory essays.

Emerging Writers Institute

Held at UC Berkeley, Stanford University, UCLA, Brown University, and Yale University, this two-week creative writing program is designed for entering 10th-12th graders to support their imaginative writing across literary genres. Students choose a focus of Poetry, Fiction, or Non-fiction.

George Washington Univ. Pre-College Program

Discover GW and DC! Two residential programs enable you to explore your academic interests and college life: a 6-week for-credit program for 11th graders or 10-day mini courses for grades 9-11.

Harvard Summer School

The Juniper Institute for Young Writers at UMass

Interlochen Center for the Arts

Hillsdale College Summer Literary Tour---In Love and War: The Land and Literature of England. 
The themes of love and war occupy much of the world’s greatest literature. English authors like Chaucer, Shakespeare, Austen, Eliot, Churchill and others, all present visions of people in the grip of love or the clash of war, people who nevertheless find therein surprising meaning amidst the chaotic human experience. Travel to Windsor, Warwick, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Oxford, Bath, London, and Canterbury to study some great English writers in the settings of their stories.
