The Art of Learning

Visual Arts at Montgomery Bell Academy invites students to explore their creativity, expand their ways of seeing, and discover the power of visual expression. Through hands-on studio work, they sharpen their skills of observation and perception while learning to communicate ideas with confidence and originality.

In the early years of the program, courses focus on building a strong foundation in the elements and principles of art. Students experiment with drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture while developing technical skills, creative problem-solving, and self-expression.

As they progress, students advance their practice by exploring personal styles of expression and engaging with both historical and contemporary art.

Our students take creative risks, refine their work through ongoing critique and reflection, and strengthen their problem-solving skills. Beyond technical training, they learn to analyze and discuss aesthetics, meaning, and conceptual ideas—developing both their artistic voice and their critical thinking.

The program is enriched by collaborations with visiting artists that expose students to a range of professional practices and perspectives, as well as annual exhibitions that allow them to share their work with the broader MBA community. A highlight of the year, the ENDADA Festival brings together students, faculty, alumni, and the greater community in a celebration of the arts, giving young artists the chance to create, exhibit, and perform in a vibrant festival atmosphere.

Opportunities such as the Wilson Art Grants provide students with artistic and cultural experiences beyond campus, allowing them to travel, engage with arts communities, and bring newfound knowledge and perspective back to their classes.

In this way, students come to understand art not only as a personal pursuit but also as a bridge to culture, history, and community.

Boys leave the program with refined artistic skills, creativity, discipline, and a broadened worldview that fosters a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
