Rooted in the belief that strong reading, writing, and critical thinking skills are essential for academic and personal growth, the English Department challenges students to engage deeply with literature and language.

Through close reading, thoughtful discussion, and frequent writing, students develop clarity, confidence, and a greater understanding of themselves and the world. From 7th grade through senior year, the curriculum emphasizes grammar, vocabulary, and style while fostering habits of inquiry and reflection. Here, students learn not only how to communicate effectively—but why language matters.

The World Languages Department helps students build meaningful communication skills while exploring classical foundations and global cultures.

Students begin with Latin—an essential part of MBA’s tradition—then continue with additional Latin study or pursue a modern language such as Chinese, French, German, or Spanish. A one-year course in Classical Greek is also available. Across all courses, students develop both fluency and cultural literacy. Our goal is to prepare them for college and beyond—as thoughtful, articulate citizens of a global community.

The History Department encourages students to examine the past with context, empathy, and intellectual rigor in order to better understand the present.

Through close reading, analytical writing, and lively discussion, students explore the complexity of historical events and ideas. The curriculum emphasizes critical interpretation, civic awareness, and the ability to form evidence-based conclusions. Here, students are not just memorizing facts—they're learning how to think historically and engage meaningfully with the world around them.

In the Math Department, students strengthen core skills while learning to approach problems with logic, precision, and creativity.

The curriculum follows a traditional course sequence with a wide range of electives, including Advanced Placement options in calculus, statistics, and computer science. Technology is used thoughtfully to support learning and deepen understanding. Whether preparing for college or exploring competition-level problem-solving, students are challenged to think clearly, persevere through difficulty, and appreciate the elegance of mathematics.

The Science Department cultivates curiosity and critical thinking through a rigorous, hands-on curriculum that prepares students for college and responsible citizenship. 

Beginning in the Junior School with physical and earth science, students progress through core courses in biology, chemistry, and physics—with multiple pathways based on interest and ability. Electives include AP courses and independent research. Classroom instruction is paired with meaningful lab work, emphasizing data analysis, experimentation, and real-world application. Our students don’t just study science—they learn to think like scientists.

MBA’s Visual and Performing Arts program fosters creativity, confidence, and personal expression through a dynamic curriculum in the visual arts, music, speech, and theater.

Whether drawing in the studio or performing on stage, students are encouraged to explore their interests, take creative risks, and develop both technical skill and artistic voice.

In visual arts courses—including drawing, painting, sculpture, and design—students learn to think critically, solve problems creatively, and cultivate a personal visual language. In the performing arts, students engage in a wide range of ensembles and classes such as Chamber Choir, Big Red Jazz, Sinfonia, Ellington Band, and theater productions, developing collaboration, stage presence, and confidence along the way.

With opportunities for students at every experience level, the arts at MBA provide a vibrant space to grow, connect, and be challenged. Each year, more than 250 students participate, with many earning recognition at regional and national levels.
