Learning with Purpose. Growing with Support.

We’re committed to helping every student reach his full potential. Academic Support is not just about addressing challenges; it’s about building confidence, developing essential skills, and creating habits that will serve students for life.

Our support is individualized, proactive, and closely integrated with classroom learning. Faculty, advisors, and support staff work together to guide students through academic hurdles and celebrate their growth.

Junior School Academic Support

Foundations for Success

In the Junior School, our focus is on building the strong academic habits and personal responsibility that prepare boys for the challenges of high school and beyond.

Support Includes:

  • Structured Transition Support: All seventh grade students will learn time management, organization, and planning through the SMARTS Executive Functioning Curriculum in their Gentleman, Scholar, Athlete class.
  • Fostering a Growth Mindset: We help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and encourage a growth mindset in meeting a student's full academic potential. We teach goal setting, meta-cognition and reflection as key aspects of the academic process.
  • Executive Function Skills: Every seventh- and eighth-grade student is encouraged to use his personalized Academic Planner to plan out his week.
  • Structured Exam Preparation: Many Junior School students will take their first cumulative exam when they come to MBA. Students have exam preparation sessions leading up to December and May exams that emphasize strategies for success.
  • Academic Monitoring & Interventions: Students facing academic challenges receive personalized plans, regular check-ins, and structured support. Support is intentionally scaffolded as students become more comfortable with rigor and expectations of their classes.
  • Accommodations & Referrals: We help boys understand how they learn and equip them with the skills and strategies to best leverage their strengths. For those with formal accomodations, we work with parents and students to understand their learning profile and develop a learning plan.
  • Collaboration with Faculty & Families: We work closely with advisors, teachers, and counselors to monitor progress and to coordinate support.
The Junior School faculty is deeply committed to knowing each student and helping him build the confidence, curiosity, and habits that form the foundation for lifelong learning.

High School Academic Support

Strategic Growth and Personalized Guidance

As students transition to high school, they face new academic expectations and responsibilities. The High School Academic Support program is designed to guide them through that transition while equipping them with the tools to become self-directed learners.

Key Features:

  • Structured Transition Support: All new high school students begin with a daily study hall during their first quarter to build academic routines and study strategies.
  • Fostering a Growth Mindset: We help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and encourage a growth mindset in meeting a student's full academic potential. We teach goal setting, meta-cognition and reflection as key aspects of the academic process.
  • Executive Function Coaching: Students meet weekly, biweekly, or as needed with Academic Support staff to develop skills like organization, prioritization, and goal setting.
  • Academic Monitoring & Interventions: Students facing academic challenges receive personalized plans, regular check-ins, and structured support such as Academic Probation sessions.
  • Specialized Instruction: Targeted English classes are available for qualifying 9th-grade students to strengthen core reading and writing skills.
  • Accommodations & Referrals: We help boys understand how they learn and equip them with the skills and strategies to best leverage their strengths. For those with formal accomodations, we work with parents and students to understand their learning profile and develop a learning plan.
  • College Transition Meetings: Each senior family with accommodations meets individually with Academic Support staff after their son finalizes his college decision. These meetings provide guidance on the process of applying for accommodations at the collegiate level, as well as tips and strategies to ensure a smooth and successful transition.
  • Collaboration with Faculty & Families: We work closely with advisors, teachers, and counselors to monitor progress and to coordinate support.
The goal is not just academic improvement—it’s personal growth, self-awareness, and confidence in one’s ability to succeed.
