Adventures in Composition
Session 1: June 10-14 from 12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m.
Session 2: July 8-12 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
For boys and girls in rising grade 7
Cost: $175

This week-long course introduces students to specific forms of composition that will be taught in the seventh grade at MBA and teaches writing as a process.
 
General Expectations:
1) MBA will give students copies of the various stories on the first day of class. 
2) Reading stories for this class IS NOT a substitute for any summer reading requirement at MBA.

Adventures in Literature
Session 1: June 10-14 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Session 2: July 8-12 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
For boys and girls in rising grade 7
Cost: $175

This week-long course introduces students to the study of literature before the seventh grade at MBA. Students will learn how to takes notes while reading a novel, how to answer study questions, how to answer a discussion question, and how to write and to revise an informal writing assignment. The final two days of the course, students will prepare and perform scenes from stories and write and read essays on topics concerning plot, character, and conflict.

Algebra I Headstart
June 3-14 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
For boys and girls in rising grades 8-9
Cost: $300

This is a preview course designed to make students more confident in their mathematical skills in preparation for entering Algebra I. The course reviews concepts and operations from Pre-Algebra and introduces materials from Algebra I.

Basic & Intermediate Debate
Week 1: June 3-7 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
Week 2: June 10-14 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
For boys and girls in rising grades 5-12
Cost $225 for 1 session or $400 for both

Hoping for admission to an A-list college or university?
Academic policy debate demonstrably improves test scores and classroom performance. Debaters enter the adult world prepared to develop informed opinions and express them effectively. Through intensive research, debaters learn to read and think critically about a wide variety of public policy issues. Admissions officers regularly cite participation in debate as one of the most beneficial of extracurricular activities for college applicants.

MBA’s Big Red Summer Debate Camp is designed for students with very little or no debate experience. Taught by MBA’s outstanding and nationally-known debate coaches, the Big Red Debate Camps will take students through an introduction to the nature, structure, and purpose of public argument in a fun and fast-paced environment. Campers will receive an introduction to the rules and practice of competitive debating as it is practiced in middle and upper schools across the nation. These camps are a great introduction to those who wish to explore the world of competitive debate.

In this class, rising 7th grade students will work primarily to develop and improve their keyboarding speed. The class also provides students with the necessary skills to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint successfully in the classroom. Discussions about Internet etiquette, online reputation, and responsibility in the digital age provide the foundation of acceptable use expected of students attending MBA.

MBA rising 7th grade students may take this course to fulfill the Computer Enrichment requirement for the year. Completing the course during the summer will allow the boys an extra study hall during one quarter.

Foundations of Writing
Session 1: June 10-14 from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. - $175 (includes book)

For boys and girls in rising grades 6-8

Although a lost art in the digital world, legible handwriting and correct spelling still count in a classical education.  This class will reinforce correct mechanics of letter and word formation through instruction, drill, and exercises.

Geometry Headstart
June 3-14 from 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m.
For boys and girls in rising grades 9-10
Cost: $300

High School Grammar Preview - Clauses and Verbals

July 22-26 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon
For boys and girls in rising grades 9-12
Cost: $175

This course introduces students to the adjective, the adverb, and the noun clauses as well as the verbals (gerunds, participles, and infinitives).

High School Study Skills - Surviving the Academic Wilderness

Session 1: June 3-7 from 12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m.
Session 2: July 15-19 from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon
For boys and girls in rising grades 9-12
Cost: $175

Students will explore principles of survival once they find themselves in an academic setting that has high expectations. They will learn to assess their own situation and to take responsibility for their success.

IPS Introduction
Session 1: June 3-7 from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Session 2: July 15-19 from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
For boys in rising grade 7
Cost: $200

The Introduction to IPS (Introductory Physical Science) is a week-long program that introduces students to a few of the fundamental concepts covered in the 7th grade science course at MBA. Basic lab techniques as well as some math skills needed in IPS will be explored. Students will get a chance to do basic physical science labs as well as a project during this 5-day course.  Areas covered will include – fundamental physical measurements, calculated physical quantities, conversions, math skills, and graphing. Each student will need to bring a calculator.

Jumpstart for Pre-Algebra

July 22-26 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
For boys and girls in rising grade 7
Cost: $175

This class provides an overview of MBA’s beginning math course. Acquainting students with concepts of positive/negative numbers, ratios/proportions, and solving equations will increase their chances to succeed during the year. Students should be proficient in the basic operations of decimals and fractions.

Junior School Grammar Preview - The Sentence and Parts of Speech
July 22-26 from 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
For boys and girls in rising grades 6-8
Cost: $175

This course covers sentence purpose, structure, parts, and errors. It also introduces students to the basic characteristics of the eight parts of speech.

Junior School Study Skills - Preparing for the Academic Wilderness

Session 1: June 3-7 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Session 2: July 15-19 from 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. 
For boys and girls in rising grades 6-8
Cost: $175

Students will learn how to prepare for an academic setting that has high expectations by learning study strategies, note taking, test taking, reading, writing, concentration, memorization, and organization.

Latin I Introduction
Session 1: June 3-14 from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Session 2: July 15-26 from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
For rising grades 8-9
Cost: $300

This course is designed for students who need a head start before beginning Latin I in order to strengthen vocabulary, grammar, and general language study skills (especially those with grades in English below 80). The course introduces the basic syntax and grammar of Latin language with a strong emphasis on Latin vocabulary and Latin roots of English words.

Latin II Preparation
July 15-26 from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
For rising grades 9-12
Cost: $300

This course is designed for students who need to review Latin I before starting Latin II in the fall. It is highly recommended for students whose average in Latin I is consistently below 80. The course reviews Latin I vocabulary, syntax, and grammar with particular emphasis on material taught during the second semester of Latin I – all indicative verb tenses, active and passive voices, the imperative mood, case usages, pronouns (especially the relative pronoun), and translation skills (both Latin-to-English and English-to-Latin).

Preparing for the SAT Math
Session 1: June 3-14 from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.
Session 2: July 8-19 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
For rising grades 9-12
Cost: $250 or $450 for both Math & Verbal Prep. (Includes book)

This two-week course will prepare students for the PSAT and the SAT Math content. The course will address the SAT's scoring system, along with additional focus on Problem Solving and Data Analysis. The course is open to students entering grades 9 to 12 who already have a basic understanding of Algebra and Plane Geometry. The course also covers 1) learning how the PSAT and SAT are constructed, 2) practicing strategies for multiple choice questions, 3) simplifying advanced math required for student-produced responses, and 4) taking timed practice tests to help students sustain focus and minimize anxiety. The course is open to students entering grades 9 to 12.

Preparing for the SAT Verbal
Session 1: June 3-14 from 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.
Session 2: July 8-19 from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
For rising grades 9-12
Cost: $250 or $450 for both Math & Verbal Prep. (Includes book)

This two-week course will prepare students for the PSAT and the SAT Verbal and Writing content. The course will address the revised SAT's scoring system, along with specific preparation for the Language/ Writing section and the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing sections of the SAT and PSAT. The course also covers 1) learning how the PSAT and SAT are constructed, 2) understanding and practicing strategies for deciding which questions to answer and how much time to devote to each, 3) expanding vocabulary, and 4) taking timed practice tests to help students sustain focus and minimize anxiety. The course is open to students entering grades 9 to 12.

This newly designed course balances building technology-based research skills with learning how to present information effectively in a public speaking environment. Students will learn how to acquire, organize, and store information from both printed and electronic sources, evaluate the legitimacy and usefulness of the information they locate, and attribute that information using proper bibliographic forms. 

MBA rising 8th grade students may take this course to fulfill the Research Enrichment requirement for the year. Completing the course during the summer will allow the boys to have study hall five days per week the entire school year instead of three days per week one semester and five days per week the other semester.
