MBA Hockey did something no team in GNASH history has ever done before: the Big Red came through the elimination bracket after dropping its first game of the postseason and emerged as champions.
Wins over Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA (4–3 OT), Station Camp–Liberty Creek–Nashville Christian (5–4 OT), Page-Summit (4–1), and Franklin (5–0) paved the way for an MBA–Nolensville rematch in the championship after the Knights took the first meeting, 2–1.
The Big Red needed to beat Nolensville twice to take home the trophy, and that is exactly what they did, winning 2–1 on Monday and 3–0 on Wednesday. Goals in the clinching game came from Henry Berk (’28), Cortland Klett (’27), and Andrew Frech (’27)—all of whom will return next season—while freshman Conner Mazzoni (’29) earned MVP honors, becoming the first freshman in league history to do so.
Senior leadership from the likes of Matthew Moore and Trace Graham—both of whom have played for the varsity squad since their eighth-grade year— helped carry the team to success all season, but the contributions of underclassmen throughout the playoffs made the difference.
It is MBA’s third hockey championship, most recently winning in 2021 and previously in 2013. The Big Red finished runner-up each year from 2015 to 2020. Congratulations to Coach Max Wutzke and the team!
