MBA students recently represented the school in a variety of extracurricular competitions, spanning science, Latin, chess, and orchestra.

The Tennessee Science Bowl — the largest regional competition of its kind in the country — challenges students to answer rapid-fire questions in math and science while collaborating strategically as a team. Representing MBA were Piers Barnard, Justin Guo, James Hood, and Bo Schlosser, who competed in seven preliminary matches before advancing to the elimination round. The event demands quick thinking, deep content knowledge, and seamless teamwork — skills that mirror the collaborative nature of real scientific work.

Meanwhile, MBA’s High School and Junior School Science Olympiad teams competed in a rigorous 23-event competition spanning biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering design. From written assessments to hands-on builds, students applied classroom learning in real time, testing both their preparation and problem-solving abilities. Both teams qualified for the State Competition and medaled across multiple events.

The academic excellence of MBA students was also evident in the latest Junior Classical League competition, where Latin scholars earned 1st place in the Class A Division. Topics covered included Roman history, grammar, mythology, Latin vocabulary, and derivatives — among others — with MBA students recognized for 14 different first-place finishes across all levels and categories.

MBA Chess also delivered an impressive performance, taking home first place at the Region Chess Tournament with a team led by Ronit Chandra, Justin Guo, Eric Chen, and Xander McGibbon. The Big Red won every round and qualified for the State Team Chess Tournament later this month.

MBA musicians also continued their recent run of recognition. The Prelude Orchestra received a rating of Excellent in both repertoire preparation and sight-reading, while the Chamber Orchestra was named Superior in the same categories.

While our students’ placements at these events are noteworthy, the greater value lies in the experience itself. These competitions cultivate intellectual confidence, resilience under pressure, and a spirit of collaboration — reinforcing the habits of inquiry and disciplined thinking that define scholarship at MBA.
