The first half of the school year will be coming to a close before long, but that hasn't slowed down the excellence of MBA's athletic teams in the Junior School. So far, the Big Red have won HVAC championships in tennis, cross country, soccer and wrestling with more in sight this winter and spring!
"We are so proud of the success of our Junior School teams this fall! The boys' hard work, resilience, and buy-in played a large part in their winning seasons," Susan Cobb, Director of the Junior School, said. "We're thankful for their dedicated coaches who build a team-first culture and encourage the boys as they strive for excellence in athletics and the classroom."
The tennis team was the first MBA squad to take home a title this school year. They did so in September with a strong showing - and rematch victory - against Ensworth on the Tigers' home courts. Seventh grader Bruce Li won the top singles division while the duo of Alex Angus and Max Schlosser claimed the No. 1 doubles championship.
MBA's always-dominant Cross Country squad was next up as the Big Red capped off a flawless season with a dominant championship showing. Steadily improving throughout the fall, Zander Pughsley finished in second overall with a personal-best time to lead the way for MBA while the four other scoring runners (Jameson Meriwether, Cullen Weaver, Isaac Simpson, John Crosslin) also set new personal record times.
As the leaves began to change color in October, so too did the season for Junior School sports. That's when soccer and wrestling stepped up to match the mark set by the sports before them.
Within a single November week, two more trophies came back to campus. Soccer did so with a 3-0 championship match win over Ensworth as Hank Roper netted two goals - just two days after he converted on a clutch penalty kick in extra time against Brentwood Academy. Goalkeeper James Denton and captain Powell Byram also contributed greatly to each win. Then, it was the group effort on the mats at Pope Prep with 10 wrestlers earning medals including four weight class champions (Isaac Simpson, Dominic Simpson, Townes Clements, Ruger Pennington - Most Outstanding Wrestler) that put the Big Red on top.
At MBA, we pride ourselves on forming our boys into excellent men in the community, the classroom, and the athletics space, and we believe the Microbe Men of Massey certainly have proved themselves so far this school year!
