Montgomery Bell Academy has had a codified Honor System, governed by the Honor System Constitution, in place since 1945. This Constitution established the Honor Council, a group of twelve students elected by their peers to hear cases of honor violations and “to promote a strong sense of honor and integrity among the students.” The Constitution also outlined formal procedures for when a student is accused of an honor violation and details the possible sanctions a student may receive.
The Constitution was amended in 1956 and 2011 with primarily procedural changes. More recently, the Student Body in April of 2025 reaffirmed its collective ownership of the Honor System and accountability for and by each other by drafting and formally adopting MBA’s first Honor Code. The result was a student-planned, student-led, and student-written Code:
An MBA student will promote a culture of honor every day to maintain a community of moral courage, integrity, and respect. He will not lie, cheat, or steal in any relationship nor tolerate those who do.
The first sentence of the Code defines the bedrock of MBA’s culture: a community that continually and intentionally fosters the shared virtues of moral courage, integrity, and respect. The second sentence’s goals are twofold: the language covers the violations of this commitment to honor while separating the Honor System from the Discipline System; and it makes explicit the accountability required to make a student-driven Honor System work.
