Montgomery Bell Academy's built a considerable lead in the field events and held off Brentwood Academy 97-94 to successfully defend its boys title on Saturday at MBA.
Steven Gaittens, a part of MBA's winning distance medley relay and high jump teams, was named Most Outstanding Boys Athlete. MBA recorded 10 first-place points in the pole vault, shot put and long jump, and shared the top spot with Goodpasture and Father Ryan in the high jump.
Leading Brentwood Academy 92-84 and needing to finish sixth or better in the 4x400 relay — the day's final event — MBA took fourth.
"We have a lot of depth in the distance events but not much in the sprints, so we need to get a big lead in the field events," said MBA senior Patrick Crum, whose long jump of 22-00.75 feet took top individual honors. "Anything we get in the sprints is a bonus."
