In a game that showcased the resilience and never say die attitude of 115 years of MBA football, the Big Red was able to capture a 29-22 overtime victory over Brentwood Academy at Tommy Owen Stadium.
Following the annual Carnival, the Big Red took the field after being visited by the 2003 State Championship team in the locker room. After finding themselves behind 22-7 halfway through the first quarter,MBA was able to rally behind a transformed defense and an opportunistic offense and was able to get to halftime trailing by a score of 22-14. The Big Red offense was led by quarterback Cole Euverard in the first half who rushed for two touchdowns and found big chunks of yardage in the air.
MBA's defense was able to pitch a shutout for the final 36 minutes of play including a game saving goalline stand late in the fourth quarter. Following a BA turnover with just over 3 minutes remaining in the game, MBA was able to drive 65 yards for the tying score which culminated with a touchdown reception by senior Grey Reames. MBA had to come up with a two point conversion, and quarterback Cole Euverard found wide open receiver Parks Ball in the back of the endzone to send the game in to overtime.
In the overtime period, MBA running back Ty Chandler scored on a tough run up the middle. Chandler finished the game with 118 yards rushing on 16 carries. The Big Red defense took the field again knowing they had to stop the Eagles from scoring a touchdown. And that is exactly what they did as safety Arthur Churchwell broke up the final BA pass attempt to seal one of the most dramatic victories in this series.
With the win, MBA earned its' 700th victory for the football program on the gridiron. Head Coach Marty Euverard earned his 100th victory of his career with the victory. MBA's record now stands at 5-0 this season. Next week is homecoming, and the Big Red will host the Trojans of Millington High School in Memphis. This will be the second match up between these two schools as MBA defeated Millington 35-14 in the second round of the 5A playoffs in 1996.
