Solid Racing at Dogwood Regatta

Dan A. Cooper
The MBA Crew Team had a great day of racing at the Dogwood Regatta in Oak Ridge, TN.  The day started off well in the early rain with the 2nd Varsity 4, led by Joe McMahan, advancing to the finals by placing second in their heat.

The 3rd Varsity 4, led by Ethan Long, had a strong race as well, but just got edged out by a strong White Rock crew for the last spot on the finals race.

The 1st Novice 4, led by Centre King, kept the early momentum going by easily advancing to the finals by open water in their heat.

The 1st Varsity 8, also led by Joe McMahan and seniors Seth Cook, Gage Anderson, and Cameron Travis, rounded out the heat races with one of their best performances of the season.  In an incredibly tough field, including power house clubs Atlanta Junior and Cincinnati, they battled for all 2000 meters but came up just 4 seconds short of a spot in the finals.

In the flight races, the U17 8, led by John Fioravanti, put together an impressive effort.  Noah Wamble, Jackson Long, and Rhys Rutherford got their first experience in an official sprint race, and were able to take 4th place on the day.

The U17 4, consisting of all freshman -Owen Hughes, Hudson Walker, John Lang, and Anderson Flack, turned in one of the most impressive races of the day.  In taking the bronze medal in their flight, they posted a time that would have sent them to the finals in the 1st Varsity 4 race!

Finishing up the day, both the 2nd Varsity 4 and the 1st Novice 4 took 5th place in their finals races.  Both boats cut an incredible 13 seconds off of their time from the morning.

Coaches Lamb, Cooper, Calico, and Cooper were thrilled with the effort and resolve that the team showed through such an intense day of competition.
