The 117 team of MBA Football opened up their season with a 21-16 road victory over Hewitt Trussville in Birmingham Alabama. After falling behind 7-0, MBA was able to answer as senior quarterback Glenn Coleman connected with senior tight end Jordan Wilson on a 19 yard strike to tie the score at 7 in the second quarter. With two minutes to go in the second half, Coleman hit junior receiver Montgomery Owen with a 69 yard pass play that would allow MBA to take a 14-13 lead. It was a lead that MBA would take to halftime thanks to the Big Red defense blocking a Hewitt Trussville field goal attempt.
In the second half, both defenses proved to be stout as the teams exchanged multiple possessions. Finally, with four minutes remaining in the game HT was able to take the lead 16-14 with a short field goal. The Big Red offense was no time as they were able to retake the lead with a two play scoring drive of their own. On the first play of the drive Coleman connected with sophomore receiver Clint Blackwell on a 48 yard pass play. Junior tailback Ty Chandler, who rushed for 127 yards on the night, capped the scoring drive with a 25 yard touchdown run. On the final drive of the game, Hewitt Trussville drove the ball deep into Big Red territory, but senior captain David Gaw was able to corral an interception and seal the victory for Team 117.
