7th Grade Football Outbattles St. Edwards

In a hard-fought game where the Big Red looked more like the Little Red as they were dwarfed by huge opposition linemen, the Maroon Platoon of the 7th Grade Football Team beat St. Edwards 8 - 6 on Thursday (9/13).

After St. Edwards marched down the field on their opening possession for a quick touchdown with a failed extra point kick, the Big Red offense answered with a touchdown run by Brooks Best and a 2-point conversion pass from Dylan Hall to Will Campbell to take an 8 - 6 lead. Although that was the extent of the scoring for the entire game, MBA's offensive line (John Powell, Sam Edwards, Todd Baker, Gray Bryant, and Dustin Kruthaupt) deserves a great deal of credit for enabling the Big Red offense to win the battle of possession time.

But in the end, the game turned into a thrilling defensive battle that was won in the trenches. Alex Benedict, Robby Mills, and Joe Richardson played vital relief roles in the interior defensive line and John Bachman, Andrew Einstman, and Whit Emerson put immense pressure on the St. Edwards quarterback hurring passes and sacking him several times. Indeed, the victory was not secured until Brook Best intercepted a pass with time running out and St. Edwards driving to get into field goal range. The change of possession enabled Cade Hooper to come in and take two knees to run out the clock.
