MBA Drops Overtime Thriller to Ensworth

Todd Moran
In another Division II shoot out, the Big Red fell short to the visiting Ensworth Tigers in overtime by the score of 50-44. The MBA offense controlled the pace of play in the first half and was able to take a 14-10 lead into halftime. Junior offensive lineman Phelps Gambill was able to recover a fumble inside the 5 yard line and rumble into the end zone for the first MBA schore. Senior quarterback Cole Euverard who accounted for over 420 yards of total offense in the game added the second touchdown on a quarterback sneak.

The Tigers dynamic running game allowed them to score on the first possession of the second half to recapture the lead 16-14. On the ensuing drive, MBA endured an untimely turnover deep in Ensworth territory that swung the momentum into the Tigers favor. From there Ensworth went on to take a 30-14 lead into the fourth quarter setting the stage for an explosive twelve minutes and overtime.

Quarterback Cole Euverard started the fourth quarter by connecting on long touchdown throws to running backs Derrick Tusie and Ty Chandler. With their backs at the wall and down 44-30 with Ensworth on the doorstep of another touchdown and only 3 minutes remaining, the Big Red defense found their resolve as Junior linebacker Sam Sullivan recorded a tackle for loss. Once again, MBA found a way to make the plays that they needed as Euverard connected twice on touchdown throws with wide receiver Austin Rolfe to push the score to 44-44 and forcing the game into overtime.

Unfortunately for MBA, Ensworth forced a turnover on the first possession and went on the score their own touchdown and secure the victory.

It was a game that will not soon be forgotten, but the Big Red must rally quickly as they face arch rival Father Ryan on Friday October 10th for the annual Spagetti Supper and Homecoming festivities.
