The Big Red Crew Team kicked off their spring racing season Saturday, March 28th 2015 at the John Hunter Regatta in Gainesville, GA.
It was a beautiful cool, sunny day with some some mild gusts of wind. Overall, it was a nice start to the season which was delayed by the late winter weather.
The day started strong with the Varsity Men's Four progressing to the finals (cox Owen Hughes '18, Gage Anderson '15, Alec Vest '15, Seth Cook '15 and Cameron Travis '15)
Next, the Varsity Lightweight Four took to the water in a tough Flight. The Varsity Lightweigh Four is the team's Freshman Four (cox Evans Looney, Owen Hughes, Hudson Walker, John Lang & Anderson Flack - all '18) who took on older crews from some fast SE Club programs placing 6th of 7 crews ahead of the other scholastistic program, Riverside Military Academy by 15.5 seconds.
The Novice Four placed 3rd in their Flight earning a bronze medal (cox Wesley Hirschman '20, Centre King '18, Harrison Avery '18, Jack Reineke '17 and Sebastian Bess '18).
The 2nd Varsity Four placed 3rd in their Flight, also earning a Bronze medal (cox Evans Looney, Joe McMahan '17, Matt Hopp '16, John Fioravanti '17 and Ethan Long '16)
Last to take to the water with 6 of the 8 oarsmen having already raced in fours prior in the day was the Varsity Eight. The boat placed 4th behind the larger SE Club Programs: Atlanta Junior Rowing Association, Asheville Youth Rowing and St. Andrews. Finishing with open water ahead of, scholastic program and in-state rival Baylor School as well as Augusta Rowing Association and Palemtto Rowing Club.
The team is set to dual McCallie on their home course on Friday, April 10th
