MBA Finishes 8th in A Draw of DecoTurf High School Tennis Championships

Mike Davidson
MBA's varsity tennis team spent the first days of Spring Break in Chattanooga competing in the DecoTurf High School Team Tennis Championships. Over a hundred teams apply every year to compete and the strongest teams are selected to participate and are separated into A, B, C, and D Divisions. In 2018, MBA was the #1 seed in the B Division. This year, MBA was an unseeded team in the A Division. MBA knew it would have three tough matches as six of the twelve teams in the A draw were defending state champions and all had strong line-ups from top to bottom. MBA played Rock Bridge of Missouri, Charlotte Country Day of North Carolina, and Myers Park of North Carolina. MBA lost the matches 8-1, 5-4, and 6-3 respectively and all of those matches had very competitive singles and doubles matches. Of the 18 singles matches played in those three contests, nine went to third set match-breakers and of those nine only one match went in MBA's favor. While it is never fun to go without a win on a trip, the tournament provided a great opportunity for challenging matches for the boys and a chance for the coaches to look at different doubles pairings and possible singles starters as we move forward in the spring season. When the team returns from Spring Break, it will start gearing up for our first region match of the year (Ensworth on April 2nd) and our second major tournament of the year (the Rotary Tournament in Chattanooga on April 5th and 6th).
