MBA XC Sniffs Victory

Coach Reynolds
Imagine not knowing the outcome of a football game, where you’re in attendance, for many hours after the final whistle has blown. Then imagine the suspense of being left with only your sense of smell to try determining the winner while you wait. Now you’re approaching the high drama of what transpires at (and after) a microbe cross country meet.

Ready to battle hills, run from ghosts, and face a few other teams, the Big Red got a bit more than it bargained for at the abandoned (read haunted) Ravenwood Country Club. In addition to the vengeful wraiths swirling about with sand wedges, an enveloping cloud of nefarious motes attacked the senses of both runners and spectators alike. Zigging and zagging nearly as much as these airborne foes, the course itself had been mapped out by M. C. Escher, and it’s possible some runners are still out there.

Speaking of runners, as I believe you expected me to do at some point, USN showed up with some fast ones. Two Tigers leapt out to an early lead that they would never relinquish as they took the top two spots. However, the Big Red pack was close on their heels. MBA locked down 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th places. Jack Montgomery, Walker Pierce, Thomas Dennis, and William Le all finished within 5 seconds of each other. Minor Ballew strolled in shortly after them to claim 8th. Then William Seibels and Mitchell Chaffin finished 10th and 11th respectively. Among this top group was a runner who managed to puke during the race and still finish in the top ten (#neverseenthatbefore).

When the results finally came out nearly 24 hours after the meet, the MBA harriers were on top:
