  • JS Tennis Triumphs in HVAC Tournament

The JS Tennis lads found a fire in the belly and played with confidence to finally take one from the Tigers at the Ensworth Tennis Center this afternoon.  After dropping the regular season series 1-4 and 2-3 vs. Ensworth, the tennis boys, "...like so many Alexanders... stiffened the sinews... summoned up the blood," and earned a hard fought 8-7 victory.

Though four teams (MBA, Ensworth, BA, and GCA) competed today, the finals in each flight were all Ensworth and MBA, effectively earning us a rematch against our toughest opponent of the season.  In the HVAC tournament, each victory earns your team a point with a total of 15 possible points across five flights of play. The fact that MBA's top tennis lads all advanced to the finals means that every player earned a crucial point to secure this team championship.

Dominant at #1 singles, Bruce Li neither double faulted nor dropped a single game in the HVAC tourney: winning 8-0, 8-0.  And yet, it was Bruce's decision at the beginning of the season to commit to playing for himself and his teammates that earned him man of the match honors for the Big Red.  Rather than accept the invitation he earned to represent Tennessee at the prestigious Ozaki Cup in Rome (Georgia), Bruce chose to play for the MBA tennis team this fall. Bruce's skills on the court and his decision to prioritize his MBA teammates over individual excellence may well have been the difference in today's team tournament victory.

Another difference-maker this afternoon was Ricky Reynolds, who elevated his game at precisely the right time, earning an 8-1 semi-finals win, and clinching the tournament victory with an 8-4 win in the #3 singles flight.   Lastly, Max Schlosser and Alex Angus remained undefeated on the season as our #1 doubles pair (8-1, 8-4).  Max successfully defended his #1 doubles title from last season (earned with current team captain Charlie Nord), and Alex stepped up in a big way after he stripped off his pesky Apple Watch and left it on the players bench.  Alex will be key in a group of 7th graders that will look to defend this HVAC title next fall.

The entire team of 18 boys were in high spirits after the match, and I'm sure Coach Cunningham will share one of the team photos he took in the days ahead.  Thanks to Karen Matthews for providing snacks and drinks for the team this afternoon.  Special thanks go to Mark Sutton, Mike Anderson, Mike Martin, Dana Noonan, Liz Nelson, David Smith, John Vernacchio, Nat Byrd, Susan Cobb, William Daughtrey, Dylan Cunningham, Palmer Thombs, and especially Coach Caroline Scholer for all the support, planning, and detail that have gone into this memorable season.

    Roll Red Tennis,

  • JS Tennis Week 5

    Good afternoon parents and players,

Unbelievably, we’ve arrived at the final week of the JS Tennis season.  With a final regular season match on Wednesday vs. USN, we’ll aim to get as many players as possible on the court.  Then on Friday, the entire team will have an early dismissal to participate in the HVAC tournament between Ensworth, Grace Christian, BA, and MBA.  We are aiming for a complete rematch with Ensworth in the finals, so that we can then win three of the finals and defend as the reigning HVAC champions from 2024.  Specific rules are laid out at the bottom of this email.  It looks like more hot and dry weather this week, so let’s drink plenty of water and keep wearing that sunscreen.

    Roll Red Tennis,
    Coaches Bromfield and Scholer

    Week 5: Sept. 15th - Sept. 19th

Tuesday -- Normal practice to 5PM

    Hospitality: Karen Matthews

Thursday -- Normal practice to 5PM

Friday -- Early Dismissal for HVAC Tournament at Ensworth (Ensworth Tennis Center)
ALL Players Dismissed at 1PM, Warm-ups at 1:30PM, Semi-Finals begin at 2PM, Finals begin at 3:15PM
    Uniform: RED Shorts, WHITE Shirts
    Hospitality: Leena Varma

Note: The whole team will be dismissed early to travel to Ensworth to support the team. Only the HVAC lineup will play matches on Friday.

** There will be a $5 admission fee to the tournament (this helps pay for medals, trophies, stipends, etc.)
See Downloads for a QR code Venmo for parents to scan for their admission to the tournament. Alternatively, please plan to pay $5 at the tournament on Friday.

***A note on tournament scoring:  Each victory translates into 1 pt for the team. If there is a tie for the team championship during the tournament (i.e. two teams winning the same
number of individual matches), the following criteria will be used, in order.
The HVAC team champion will be:
    a) The school with the greatest number of HVAC champions, then
    b) The team with the best regular season record for the HVAC matches, then
    c) The winner of the regular season match between the two schools

  • JS Tennis Week 4 and Ensworth Match Details

    Good afternoon parents and players,

We ended last week with a true team highlight as both Varsity and JS tennis teams were treated to an impromptu message from Vanderbilt men’s tennis head coach, Scott Brown.  Head Coach Brown spoke to the boys about the importance of mental toughness, physical discipline, and having fun as keys to success on and off the tennis court.  All tennis players at MBA should take advantage of the opportunity to see the Vanderbilt Men’s and Women’s tennis teams practicing at MBA this fall while their home courts are under construction.  Activity Periods or Lunch Periods are the appropriate times for interested boys to watch some high level tennis on our home courts.

This upcoming week will be another busy one for JS Tennis as we visit Ensworth for an HVAC rematch and host Woodland Middle School after the 7th graders have departed for Camp Laney.

  • JS Tennis: Week 3

    Good afternoon parents and players,

I hope everyone has enjoyed some time on the court, or watching your favorite players take the court at the US Open, this Labor Day Weekend.

This next week will feature three practices and one home match vs. Brentwood Academy on Thursday.  BA plans to bring 11 players, and the coach has told me that they are not a terribly deep team, so the lineup will vary slightly from our previous HVAC matches.  We’ll hope the afternoon thunderstorms hold off until after 5:30 or so, especially on Thursday.

    Week 3: Sept. 1st-Sept. 5

  • Friday Practice Ends at 4:30 / Match Details vs. McCallie for Saturday

Today, practice ends at 4:30PM this afternoon to make way for football tailgating and parking for the home opener vs. Pearl Cohn.  If you need to wait for a ride at 5, please do so in the Burke Cafe or in front of Massey.

    Tomorrow:
    1) We depart at 7AM from the John Bell Keeble Tennis Courts at MBA.  We aim to return by 2:30PM.  For those of you not traveling with the team bus, please let me know if you run into any transportation issues so we can help connect you to another ride to Sewanee.
    2) Uniforms will be: WHITE shorts. WHITE shirts.
    3) Thank you to the Topping family for providing snacks and drinks. Feel better soon, Chris!
    4) The Singles and Doubles Lineups are at the bottom of the message.
    5) The team bus will stop at the Mountain Goat Market for team pizza before heading back to Nashville. MBA will cover pizza for all players, and the boys are welcome to bring a drink of their own or bring a few dollars to grab a cold drink from the market when we stop.
    6) No cell phones are allowed on this tennis trip, but a boy is allowed to have a phone (turned off in his bag) so he can call or text a parent with updated arrival times.  Coach Scholer or I will send another email when we are 30-45 minutes away from MBA. Please do bring cards, games, or other activities for the bus ride to Monteagle.

  • A New Season for MBA JS Tennis Begins

    Players and parents,

After a competitive tryout process this week, you've earned a spot on our Fall JS Tennis Team. Congratulations!  We kick off quickly next week with three days of practice, a mixed doubles scrimmage at Harpeth Hall, and an away match vs. McCallie on Saturday, Aug. 23rd, where every boy will get a match.

    A few notes:
    1) Practices. The first day of practice is currently scheduled for the second day of school: Tuesday, August 19th from 3:30-5PM.  We practice M-F from 3:30-5PM. Boys should get changed in the bathrooms by the tennis courts or in the JS Locker Room in the Burkeholder Center.

    2) Uniforms. Uniforms have already been ordered and will be distributed as soon as they arrive. Each player will receive two pairs of shorts and two shirts.  We try to get each boy a uniform that best fits, but the smallest size available through our uniform reps is an Adult Small. Thank you for being patient as they grow into their uniforms.

    3) Drinks and Snacks. We rely on families to volunteer to provide snacks and drinks for our home and away tennis matches.  If you are able to volunteer to bring either snacks OR drinks for one of our upcoming matches, please email Coach Scholer (caroline.scholer@montgomerybell.edu). Thank you for keeping the boys well nourished and hydrated!

    4) Schedule. Please use the JS Tennis tab under "Groups" in Scholar to find information about the upcoming season, directions to away matches, and even match recaps and team photography. This season culminates with the HVAC Championships on Friday, Sept. 19th.

    5) Got a question?  Please check these FAQs, and then reach out to Coach Scholer or myself if you need additional info.

Looking forward to a great season ahead.  And again, congratulations boys!

    Best,
    Coach Bromfield and Coach Scholer
