Big Red Take Down Blue Tornado up on Monteagle Mountain

The Big Red did not have to wait until lunch at Mountain Goat Market to satiate their hunger as they won in convincing fashion over McCallie with an overall 16-10 total match score.
The JS Tennis Team arrived at Sewanee's Bruton-Guerry Tennis Center hungry to reclaim the venerable Vining Cup from in-state rival McCallie.  For those who don't know the history, former MBA JS Tennis Coach, Tim Boyd, honored long time McCallie Middle School Tennis Coach, David Vining, by establishing a Vining Cup Trophy in 2017 to recognize Coach Vining's 30+ years of coaching Middle School Tennis in Tennessee.  The Big Red did not have to wait until lunch at Mountain Goat Market to satiate their hunger as they won in convincing fashion with an overall 16-10 total match score.

The Vining Cup is traditionally decided by the top six singles and top three doubles teams; the tennis lads notched a decisive 7-2 victory.  In doubles, Bruce Li and Charlie Nord dominated 8-1, while Ricky Reynolds and Alex Angus won what was the match of the day for the Big Red.  Down 3-6, Ricky and Alex "locked-in" and took the next five games to score an exhilarating 8-6 comeback win giving the Big Red all the momentum heading into singles with a 2-1 lead.  Bruce Li, Alex Angus, and Andrew Smith, with some brilliant coaching from new JS Tennis Coach Caroline Scholer, all scored their first official singles victories for MBA tennis.  Returners Charlie Nord and Max Schlosser (who won the clinching fifth point) added to the final tally: 7-2.

The JS Tennis team is particularly deep with talent this year, and every boy on the team can be proud of his effort in the first test of the season.  In exhibition matches, which count towards the overall match score, Leo Cox, Adrian Hufford, Blake Kitchin, and Indio Bradley all went 2-0 on the day winning both singles and doubles matches.  The game ball went to Alex Angus for his impressive perseverance and level-head on the court, and the team thanks the Topping family for providing snacks and hopes Chris gets better in time to rejoin the team for upcoming HVAC action against Grace Christian and Ensworth next week.   Complete match scores are attached. Roll red tennis!
