MBA 7th Grade Football Team Loses A Heartbreaker to Coopertown Middle

MBA’s 7th Grade Football Team Lost to Coopertown Middle 26-22 in a hard-fought game marred by a controversial ending. As time ran out in the 4th quarter with MBA driving inside Coopertown’s 10-yard line, the officials called a penalty on the defense. Since a game cannot end of a defensive penalty, MBA should have been given an opportunity to run one more offensive play. However, inexplicably, the officials huddled together and then shamelessly changed the call to an offensive penalty thereby denying MBA a final chance to try to win the game. Although the officials proved to be the final arbiter of outcome of the game, nothing should be taken from either MBA or Coopertown in that both teams played with great heart and passion. As the coaches explained to the boys after the game, a team should never allow the game to be close enough for the officials to be able to determine the final outcome because, as demonstrated in Coopertown yesterday, officials are not unbiased or infallible.

The game was highlighted by the passionate defensive play of James Kay who wreaked havoc on Coopertown’s offense and the determined ball-carrying of Brian Oslin who ripped Coopertown’s defense. Additional highlights included Warren Lipscomb’s touchdown pass to Alex Kohls topped off by another Lipscomb pass to Ross Martin for the 2-point conversion; Alex Kohls fumble recovery for a touchdown topped off by a Brian Oslin’s run for the 2-point conversion; and Warren Lipscomb’s touchdown pass Mattison Hamilton (failed 2-point conversion).

Although MBA’s 7th grade football team is 0-2, the coaches are confident that the boys will bounce back when MBA travels to West Wilson next Tuesday (9/12) for a 4:30pm kickoff and host St. Edwards next Thursday (9/14) at 4:30pm.
