MBA has started a chapter of the Junior Classical League this year, thanks to the impetus of students Jake Simons (now serving as Tennessee JCL Historian) and Kevin Wang, both of whom have participated in the past as independent members in state and national JCL competitions. Although currently very small, as we go through the logistics of starting up a chapter, seven students from the Classics Club have joined the state and national organizations, and five (all Latin IV students) were able to travel to Hume Fogg Academic High School yesterday (Feb. 27) for the 32nd Annual Mid-State Competition.
The five students - Tom Bu, Furman, Haynes, Parrish Preston, Jake Simons, and Kevin Wang - all competed in the Level 4 academic contests:
Tom placed 4th in Latin IV Reading Comprehension and 5th in Latin IV Derivatives
Furman placed 4th in Latin IV Derivatives, 4th in Latin IV Reading Comprehension (tied with Tom), and 5th in Latin IV Vocabulary
Parrish placed 5th in Latin IV Reading Comprehension
Jake placed 1st in Roman History IV, 2nd in Latin IV Derivatives, 4th in the Level 4 Heptathlon, 4th in Latin IV Grammar, 4th in Latin IV Vocabulary, and 5th in Roman Life IV
Kevin placed 1st in Latin IV Grammar, 1st in Latin IV Vocabulary, 3rd in Latin IV Derivatives, and 3rd in Latin IV Reading Comprehension.
All present and former Latin students currently enrolled are invited to join the Classics Club (there is a Community Group on the WH website where students may request to join. Students do not have to join JCL to be part of that group. Watch the Daily Announcements for the next meeting.
