The Science Department of Montgomery Bell Academy is pleased to announce the selection of recipients for the Wilson Science and Engineering Grants and the Vanderbilt Medical Research Fellowship.
The Wilson Science and Engineering Grants are awarded to deserving high school students (rising 9th – 12th grades) for the upcoming summer. These students have demonstrated excellence in several of the scientific disciplines, have an interest in pursuing a Science, Technology, or Engineering discipline in college, and have proven to be of exemplary character by having an established record of representing the school well, both on and off campus.
This year’s grantees are:
Drew Benson – NC State, Robotics
Bates O’Neal – Stanford, Robotics
Andrew Dupuis – Duke, Robotics
Nathan Sharp – Arizona, Astronomy
Brad Bennett – Marine Biology, UNC-Wilmington
Sam Hurd – Engineering, Stanford
Tarun Mallipeddi – Math and Science Scholars Program, Michigan
Caleb Carpenter – Math and Science Scholars Program, Michigan
Ben Chen – Math and Science Scholars Program, Michigan
Rahul Ramanna – Engineering, NC State
The Vanderbilt Medical Research Fellowship is an opportunity for a rising Junior or Senior high school student to work in the hospital/medical research setting. The responsibilities are varied, but center around database work, observation of research procedures, as well as scientific readings and discussion. Past participants have also been exposed to surgical techniques and have, on occasion, been included as an author on research publications.
The ideal applicant has a strong, demonstrable interest and ability in the sciences and has aspirations of pursuing a career in the medical field. The applicant should also be proven to be of exemplary character, having an established record of representing the school well, both on and off campus.
This year’s VMRF recipient is Christopher (Kip) Worthington ’14.
