The MBA JS XCers keep their eyes open, because they never know when they'll learn something new. Today, they learned about a new (to most of them) race course at Vaughn's Creek. Ye Olde VC has been around, but it still offers up some stunning surprises. The Big Red have had their share of surprises recently, so they were ready for whatever the course could throw at them.
Artificially crammed into a 7-wide starting box, the boys learned what it must be like to be a horse in the starting gates just over the hill at the Steeplechase. This newfound equine empathy launched them off the starting line with blinders affixed and eyes focused on the finish. They quickly learned that there's almost always somebody faster, as a BA runner proved that he's part eagle and part pegasus (yeah, he had four wings). Plus, the kid's name is Race (true fact). Fortunately, his teammates had no such mythical genes or prophetic names, so the Big Red ran on undaunted.
In fact, that pegasus/eaglet kid inspired the Big Red to acquire legendary powers of their own. In one of its classic, wily moves, the course tossed cars right into the middle of the race, so the boys learned how to dodge them with Olympian agility. In the middle of Coach Holland's algebra class today, Jameson Meriwether learned that he's a cross country runner. He immediately reinforced that learning by leading the team with a 12:05 and a 3rd place overall finish (behind the BA eaglet and a St. Matthew's kid who was part Nemean lion). Having learned that he had no English homework tonight, John Crosslin excitedly raced across the line with a time of 12:15 and a 5th place finish. Cullen Weaver, who learned that his parents first met on this very cross country course, crossed the line at 12:18 and 7th overall. Gus Rogers recently learned that he's Captain America's great grand nephew twice removed and finished basically alongside Cullen in 8th overall. Closing out our scoring top 5, Zander "the Great" Pughsley protected the Big Red's chances of victory with a time of 12:28 and 9th overall.
With many thanks to Hampton's fam for post-race refreshments and to Coaches Russell, Dougherty, Paolicchi, Hackney, Crosslin, Deresu, Thombs, Oliver, and Tasker for their incalculable contributions, the Big Red learned themselves a victory today.
