BIG RED ADD TWO TITLES TO ALREADY IMPRESSIVE SPRING
What a spring it's been for MBA Athletics! Adding to state championships already claimed in both lacrosse and shotgun, the Big Red came out on top in competitive fields for track & field as well as soccer this past week at TSSAA Spring Fling in Murfreesboro.
Wednesday at Dean A. Hayes Stadium on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University, Jack Wallace (3200-meter and 800-meter), John Switzer (High Jump), Henry Ambrose (Pole Vault) and Jackson Reid (300-meter Hurdles) took home the top spot in their individual events. Every point earned by all the boys that raced proved to be crucial in the quest to beat Christian Brothers and McCallie for the overall team title. The championship hung in the balance entering the final lap of the night’s last event, but the Big Red pulled through in a dramatic finish to bring the trophy back to The Hill for the first time since 2001.
The momentum carried into Thursday at Richard Siegel Soccer Complex where MBA’s always-awesome fan support showed up in numbers to cheer the Big Red on against the Blue Tornado. It was a second championship clash between the two schools in less than a week with lacrosse defeating McCallie the Friday before. Bo Robbins scored five minutes into the game, but McCallie was able to tie and send things to overtime. There, Hawkins Russell put the Big Red ahead again, but once more, McCallie tied the match late. Penalty kicks were required to decide the battle, and in the ninth round - after more than one necessary MBA makes to keep the game going - Hayes Weller came up with a huge save, opening the door for Hudson Strnand to bury the game winner in the back of the net.
The two championships put a cap on an all-around impressive spring - and school-year - for MBA Athletics, and we can’t wait to see what lies ahead for the Big Red in the fall!
