Brothers Take 1st and 2nd Place in Bridge Building Competition
Michael Marro
Robert ('12) and Brinton ('16), the brothers Hoover, did an outstanding job representing MBA on Saturday, 26 February 2011, at the regional ASCE bridge building competition held at the Adventure Science Center. The construction and testing of model bridges promotes the study and application of fundamental principles physics and also helps high school students develop "hands on" skills through bridge construction. By participating in the ASCE/ International Bridge Building Competition, students get a flavor of what it is to be an Engineer, designing structures to a set of specifications, and then seeing them perform their function. They are also provided with an academically-oriented extracurricular activity which is recognized nation-wide.
Brinton, who is not eligible since he is only in 7th grade, had the best bridge of the day, surpassing the 1st place bridge from Glencliff and was the only bridge to max out at 29 kg (roughly 64 lbs). Robert earned 2nd overall and an invitation to the National Championship to be held 30 April 2011 at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois.
