Four MBA scholars participated in the National Junior Classical League Convention held July 26-30 at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Rising senior Jake Simons, president of the Tennessee Junior Classical League, was joined by rising senior Kevin Wang and rising sophomores Michael Milam and Faris Wasim. The NJCL annually hosts a convention at which Latin and Greek students from high schools and colleges gather for academic competitions, colloquia, and other activities. This year, there were 1648 delegates in attendance.
In academic competitions, Michael Milam placed 2nd in Latin Grammar, and did well in Latin Vocabulary, Latin Derivates, Reading Comprehension, and Mythology; Jake Simons placed 4th in Latin Literature, 5th in Roman History, 6th in Hellenic History, and did well in Ancient Geography, Classical Art, Latin Vocabulary, as well as earning 2nd place for his production of the Tennessee State Digital Scrapbook; Kevin Wang placed 3rd in Latin Grammar, 4th in Latin Vocabulary, did well in Latin Derivatives, Reading Comprehension, and Mythology, and won 3rd place in the "That's Entertainment" talent show for his piano rendition; Faris Wasim did well in Mottoes, Roman Life, Latin Derivates, Latin Literature, Latin Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, and Latin Grammar.
This was MBA's first official trip as a JCL chapter to the nationals, since our chapter was only formed this year. Ms. Sarah Ellery and Dr. Edward Gaffney are the sponsors, and Dr. Gaffney accompanied the students to Wake Forest.
